How to choose a suitable USB3 cable

Not all cables are the same

USB comes with great advantages, such as the 5V power supply directly to the device, but also with some great disadvantages such as the event of loose cables.

USB is designed for quick and easy connections/disconnections, so standard connectors don’t keep cables firmly enough to withstand the heavy vibration encountered in industrial applications.
Over time, these connectors can loosen and cause malfunctioning; loose USB cables can lead to data loss, software hang-ups, and blue screens. In the wrong environment, they can even lead to fires or explosions.

To avoid these problems, NECTA, CELERA, and CELERAOne USB 3.1 Gen 1 can accommodate cables with screw-lock connectors: these cables are highly recommended, especially when movements and vibrations may affect the stability of the connection between the camera and the PC. If the cable is subjected to repeated stress, it is also recommended to adopt flexible chain-specific cables.

It is always important to evaluate the electrical resistance of the cable power section: thin cables usually cause large voltage drops, limiting the required power being provided to the device.
Furthermore, a well-shielded cable will improve EMI/RFI performance.

In order to properly work with Alkeria cameras, your cable must match the USB 3.1 Gen 1 standard: please refer to “Universal Serial Bus 3.1 Specification” available at www.usb.org.

Which USB3 controller should you use?

Some hints on how to choose your USB3 board

The data stream from our cameras may reach 3.2 Gbit/s (6.4 Gbit/s in total for CELERA cameras). To ensure such performances is therefore required that the slot housing the USB 3.0 controller supports PCI Express 2.0 or higher, to avoid bandwidth restrictions that may limit the performance of the camera.
Double-check your USB chipset on your computer before using the camera, since common USB 3.0 PCIe multiport adapters, as well as USB 3.0 ports built-in in some PCs, generally use a single controller and/or internal USB 3.0 hubs.

Alkeria cameras can operate also with USB interfaces prior to 3.0, but some functionality may not be available or suffer significant performance downgrading.
The best operating conditions are achieved when the USB 3.0 bus is entirely reserved for the camera.

If your PC system doesn’t have a dedicated USB3 controller and you should need to pick a third-party one: we recommend using USB3 boards equipped with Asmedia ASM3142 or Fresco Logic FL1100EX controllers.
Intel controllers available on some motherboards are suitable too: please, always remember to use the latest W10 edition with the latest Microsoft drivers. If you are not sure, we suggest making a clean install of your system.
During installation, please keep the USB 3.0 cable far from potential EMC interference sources (e.g. power cords and cables carrying strong impulse currents).
